I live midway down the Oregon coast. I currently have a 3-tab shingle roof almost 30 years old. I would like to put on a laminated roof (probably IKO as I can get it from Pro Build at about $28 per bundle for Architectral Shingles). I was thinking of having it put over the existing roof. If it can be, can the underlayment be put on over the old shingles 1st and then put the laminated shingles down? You mention the underlayment to be Felt, Synthetic, Ice & Water Shield. Does that mean all 3, or just 1 of them? All I get is social security Just above $1,000 month and a little from a beneficiary IRA (that’s almost empty) I think I have someone to do the installation and not charge me. Now I have to find a way to buy the materials. He has not measured anything yet, so I am not sure how many bundles I will need. I do like the idea of having Ice and Water Shield..would that also prevent moss from growing on the roof? Is there any other things I should be aware of? Thank you.

Jerry,

It’s ideal that you don’t do 2nd layer. It’s best to tear off old roofing, and install new over good sheathing.

But if that’s not an option, you CAN do 2nd layer. I pretty much don’t need underlayment, but if you do want it, i recommend to use GAF Deck Armor over old shingles (it’s about $0.20 per sq. ft.).

You should not use felt as underlayment in a 2nd layer application, and definitely don’t use ice and water shield – it’s a waste of $$ for your purposes, and won’t stick to granular surface of old shingles any way.

If you do tear off, I also recommend to just use Deck Armor instead of felt/ice and water shield.

Good luck
